NYC Assignment

Gustave Moreau
"Oedipus and the Sphinx, 1864
I thought I took a picture of the caption but unfortunately I didn't.

These two paintings from the Metropolitan Museum in New York City, are completely different from each other because of a few things. One thing that separates them are the colors. In "Oedipus and the Sphinx", the colors to me seem very dull, light only comes about from their skin, but the background is rather plain. In the second piece the colors used are bright. The most obvious difference between the two paintings is the subject matter. In the first paintings it seems to me to very mystical and not realistic. In the second piece it seems to be a war going on and is very much realistic. I think what makes them similar is the fact that they incorporated animals, even though in the first painting its half animal half man. I also think that the second piece is more detailed than the first.
