Homework 4

Chapter 9

1. Three ways to define a pattern is by shape, values and texture.
2. A grid can help define a pattern  because its helps you determine where things are placed.
3.Pattern is the design or way the shapes and object are put together to form a composition. Texture is the usually multi-layered, color and tonal contrast caused by varying brush direction and technique.
4. Texture can be used to create visual interest by giving an object or the artwork something interesting like leaves or  feather or etc so it can look interesting.
5. Actual texture is texture which may be physically felt and implied texture is texture that cannot be felt.
6.A collage is a form of art in which various materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric are arranged and glued to a surface.
7. Tromp L' oile is a visual deception, especially in paintings , in which objects are rendered in extremely fine detail emphasizing the illusion of tactile and spatial qualities.

Chapter 10

1. Value is the lightness to darkness of a color, as it has to do with the addition  of white or black and not with the mixing of colors. visual scale refers to the gradual movement from black to gray to white
2. Achromatic gray is refracting light without dispersing it into its constituent colors.
3. Value contrast is the maximum of contrast between light and dark
4. To create balance in a composition with value the artist plays around with the colors from light to dark.
5. To create emphasis with value, the artist should use darker colors instead of lighter colors.
6.Chiaroscuro is an Italian word meaning "light dark"used to describe the skillful balance of light and dark in a painting, with strong contrasts to create dramatic effects. This was during the Renaissance Period.
7.Aerial perspective is how atmospheric conditions influence our perception of objects in the distance.

The piece I chose is called "Birds of Beebe Woods" by Salley Mavor. I really like this artwork because of the material that she use to get this texture or effect, which is wool. The technique she used is stitching. You can see in the border of the art, the pattern she uses. She even uses some patterns within the artwork itself. This is actual texture because you can touch the piece and feel the material that she used. It could be possible that she did a collage of birds to help her along the way of this project, to see what type of bird she would want to incorporate in her work. I like the different values she used for the color of the birds as well. Some are light and than some are darker. I aslo really like the colors she used for the background because they are not all the same color but their all in the same color family.
